Students first, no exceptions.
Youth Development, the Champion way.
Here’s what our students need to achieve before they can test for their each belt test. We use a color-coded tape system to mark their progress:
Yellow Tape - Tenets Shoutout: Students recognizing peers who exemplify our core values like respect and integrity. Those who get a shoutout, receive a stripe! If you get more than one shoutout, you get a bar on the stripe to count the shoutouts!
White Tape - Korean Language: Mastering new phrases each week. With quizzes before each test! Study material will be found here in the Champion’s Vault!
Green Tape - Technical Skills: Perfecting our blocks and strikes. Aimed more at proper execution so that in the scenario a student has to apply these skills in the real world, they can be confident in their own abilities.
Blue Tape - Kicking Techniques: From the basics to breaking kicks, students are expected to perform to the best of their abilities, while pushing those boundaries just enough to initiate growth.
Red Tape - Poomsae Patterns: Working on their patterns and precision. Students must be able to perform their pattern on their own without assistance to be able to move on to the next level. This includes form, stances, grace and memorization.
Black Tape - Sparring: Applying their skills in controlled sparring sessions. This includes, strength, speed, form, control, and perseverance.
Each color represents a specific skill area they’re mastering. Let’s encourage our kids as they work towards these goals!
When a student has gained all of their colour-coded checkpoints, they will be given a card to bring to their parents and their teachers at school, who will verify the student’s behavior outside the dojang. If the results are in their favour, they will be granted the opportunity to test for their next belt.
Ages 5-11
At our martial arts school, we believe in developing not just skills but also character. That's why we're introducing a new behavior stripe system for our students aged 5-11. On the other side of their belt, each student has the opportunity to earn three special stripes, each representing important values we foster in our classes:
Purple Stripe for Kindness: This stripe is awarded to students who consistently show compassion and help their peers in and out of class.
Orange Stripe for Manners: Good manners are key! This stripe recognizes students who are polite and respectful to instructors and classmates.
Brown Stripe for Focus: Staying focused during class is crucial. This stripe celebrates students who demonstrate great concentration and dedication to their training.
These stripes serve as milestones in our students’ growth, encouraging them to embody the principles of Taekwondo both in the dojang and in everyday life. Help us celebrate their progress as they strive to embody these key traits!
Onoway Champion Taekwondo Leadership Program
Empowering Tomorrow's Leaders Through Martial Arts
Welcome to the Onoway Champion Taekwondo Leadership Program, where we cultivate not just skilled martial artists but future leaders. Inspired by the traditional concept of dharma transmission, Japanese Ikigai, and Korean Nunchi, our program is designed to guide students on a transformative journey from enthusiastic beginners to masterful teachers and community leaders.
Program Overview
At Onoway Champion Taekwondo, we believe that leadership begins with passion. Our leadership program initiates when a teacher recognizes a student's dedication to the art of Taekwondo. From there, we support them through a structured path towards mastery, teaching, and beyond:
Leadership Team Membership: As students demonstrate their commitment and skill, they are invited to join our Leadership Team. Here, they start their journey by assisting with beginner classes, nurturing their ability to teach and guide others under the supervision of seasoned instructors.
Junior Instructor Role: Upon reaching Black Belt level, students may transition into the role of Junior Instructors. This significant step involves leading their own classes, starting with beginners and gradually advancing to more complex training sessions. This role not only enhances their teaching skills but also introduces them to professional responsibilities, as they are compensated for their efforts.
Advanced Mentorship: The journey continues as students progress to higher levels. Our experienced instructors will mentor them in advanced martial arts techniques and critical leadership skills. The curriculum includes business management, facility maintenance, and advanced pedagogical strategies to prepare them to eventually take over senior roles within the school. Contributing to the next generation of leaders to eventually become the successors of their roles.
Core Components
Mentorship Training for Teachers: We provide our instructors with specialized training in mentorship, focusing on fostering motivation, empathy, and effective communication.
Progress Tracking: Students and instructors can track milestones and development through a digital progress system, ensuring clarity and motivation throughout their journey.
Community Engagement: Our program extends beyond the dojang, involving students in community events that resonate with our core values, fostering a sense of civic responsibility.
Reflective Practices: We encourage leaders to engage in regular reflective practices like journaling and meditation, enhancing their personal growth and understanding of their leadership role.
Recognition and Ceremonies: We celebrate each milestone in our students' journey with traditional ceremonies that recognize their achievements and readiness to take on new challenges.
Parental Involvement: We engage parents in the development process, offering sessions where they can learn about our philosophy and witness their child’s progress firsthand.
Feedback Mechanisms: Our program thrives on continuous improvement, facilitated by regular feedback from students to help refine and enhance the learning experience.
Legacy Projects: Each graduating class contributes a legacy project, leaving a lasting imprint that inspires future generations.
