FAQ

  • What age can my child start classes?

We welcome children starting from age 5. Our beginner classes are designed to be fun and supportive, so even the youngest kids can build confidence and learn the basics of Taekwondo in an encouraging environment. If your child is a bit younger and you think they’re ready, feel free to reach out, and we can discuss if they’d be a good fit to start!

  • How much does it cost, and what’s included?

We offer several flexible options depending on how often your child wants to train:

1 Class per Week: $70/month or $600 upfront (includes online resources and access to the Leadership Program).

2 Classes per Week: $80/month or $700 upfront (same benefits as above).

3 Classes per Week: $110/month or $950 upfront (includes everything above, plus Fight-Team-Fridays (if ready) and a free 30-minute private session each month).

4 Classes per Week: $120/month or $1100 upfront (includes everything above, plus a free T-shirt).

There’s also a 1-week free trial, so your child can experience the classes before committing, and an early bird discount for uniforms if paid in full by Oct. 1st.

  • What’s unique about your teaching approach?

Our goal isn’t just to teach Taekwondo; it’s to guide kids in personal development. Classes emphasize core values like kindness, respect, focus, and discipline, supported by a behavior-based belt system where students earn color-coded stripes for values and techniques.

The structure is clear: each belt has specific colored tapes for skills (like Yellow for core values, Green for techniques, Red for patterns). After completing all tapes, students also get a behavior card to confirm good behavior at home and school, allowing them to test for their next belt.

  • What kind of community does Onoway Champion Taekwondo offer?

Parents and kids will find a supportive, family-like environment here. Many students become friends, and the Leadership Program encourages older students to support younger ones. Our goal is for each student to feel empowered, whether they’re five or fifteen, and to give them a space where they can truly thrive, build confidence, and grow with friends.

  • How does the behavior stripe system work?

The behavior stripes help kids develop qualities beyond the mat. Each belt has three behavior stripes:

    Purple for Kindness

    Orange for Manners

    Brown for Focus

Kids earn these by demonstrating these values, and they’ll be motivated to build good habits inside and outside the school.

  • Are there additional costs for equipment, events or testing

Uniforms: Students will need a uniform, which can be purchased through the school, with a discount available for early enrollment.

Sparring Gear: Required for students participating in sparring sessions. Gear is available for purchase so students can safely join Fight Team Fridays and sparring-focused classes.

Fight-Team-Fridays: $20/month unless your child is enrolled for three or more days per week, in which case it’s included.

Tournaments: Held by other clubs, tournaments are larger, more formal events that give students a chance to test their skills in a competitive setting. Entry fees are typically around $100.

Sparfests: A smaller, more casual alternative to tournaments, sparfests are held in smaller venues, creating a friendly, less formal environment for sparring practice. Entry fees range from $30-$50.

Belt Testing: There is a fee for belt testing, which varies by level. Lower belt tests are lower in cost, and the fee gradually increases as students progress to higher belts. This fee covers testing materials and belt issuance.

Private Sessions: Available at $50 per 30 minutes or included if your child attends classes 3 or 4 days per week.

  • What happens if my child misses a class?

We know things come up! If your child misses a class, they’re allowed a make-up class for each session they miss, as long as it’s used within 30 days of the missed class. This flexibility ensures they stay on track, even if life gets busy. Our rotating class structure means they’ll still get a balanced experience whenever they attend.

  • Are there classes on statutory holidays?

No, we don’t hold classes on statutory holidays. Our goal is to respect family time on these days. If your child’s regular class falls on a holiday, they can simply join in on their next usual day when classes resume.

  • How does the rotating class structure work?

Our weekly schedule rotates between technical days, sparring days, and pattern (Poomsae) days. This gives students well-rounded training and means they get to experience all aspects of Taekwondo throughout the week, no matter which days they attend.

  • Do we have to commit to certain days each week?

You don’t have to “lock in” specific days. We just ask that families pick consistent days week-to-week to create a predictable routine. This keeps classes balanced and allows students to build steady progress with their peers.
